For Your Information The Marion Star Thursday, October 21, 1993 Page 5 Zoning Friday, Oct. 22 Accu-Weather forecast for daytime conditions and high temperatures From Page 1 With about 100 more vehicles trips per day, Carlyle added, "Significantly, you're not talking about a lot more traffic." While Carlyle said he believes the sanitary and storm sewers have the capacity to handle the project, when pressed later he said if the sewers need to be upgraded, it would be paid for through a special assessment district an unpopular notion among the project' neighbors who would be saddled with the bill. Carlyle noted earlier a new storm sewer on Merchant Avenue will mean more capacity to drain water. Area resident Dick Rees said the traffic from the units would be "a lot less to purchase it and make it a park, the condominiums are "the lesser of two evils." Schools Superintendent Robert Thiede said during an auction two years ago no one showed any interest in the property except Ludwig. Public support may prove to be crucial.

"If the people are dead set against (the project), it's going to be very hard to get this through City Council," said Foos. But he challenged residents to accept the fact that the parcel will not stay as it is and consider what's best for their neighborhood. The committee's recommendation is expected to come before council for approval, or the first of three public readings, on Nov. 22. Marion Tonight, clear.

Arndt told the audience he would much rather have properties that enhance property values than accept the possibility of low-income housing on the site instead. Some residents, such as South Grand Avenue resident Eric Barcus, do support the project. "With all the progress this project has been through I think this is the logical end," he said. Barcus added the project will increase property values at a site that is dangerous as it is now.
