The horse, hich was a valuable one, weigh ing aliout r0, and owned by Sylvester Likius, of this place, was being driven by Samuel Kick, accompanied by L. ltritton.

The trench extends from the street to the pavement on either side; just room enough being left, as is the custom of the waterworks excavations, to drive over. Men were orking to one tide of the driveway, throwing out dirt. At this the horsa' became frightened, and plunged violently to the opposite le, going head foremost into the trench, which was six feet deep. The accident drew a crowd of excited men, and by the aid of rope and tackle the unfortunate beast was finally dragged out and was able to get on hi feet. It was a most pitiful sight, and the men worked hkeTrogans to relieve the poor animal, and the rescue was a most fortunate one.

Mil. The startling announcement of the death of John Hudson was received unexpectedly at an early hour this morning, by a host of that gentleman's friends and acquaintances in the city Mr.

Hudson had not been in the best of health, but was still able to he about his north Main street home. He arose at an early hour this morning and reported that he had passed a most com fortable night, having rested nicely, shortly alter arising, and about 6 o'clock, ho went to the water closet in the rear of his residence. Here he re mained until Mrs. Hudson lecame alarmed and she went to see if any thing was wrong. She was greatly shocked to find her husband in a sit ting posture, with his head fallen forward on-his breast, apparently dead.

Assistance as summoned immediately and the man carried to the house, where the only preceptible sign of life was the beating of the pulse. Phy sicians were called, but before their arrival the spirit of the rugged man had passed to another world. His sudden leath is attributed to paralysis of the heart, as he was subject to attacks of heart trouble, Mr. Hudson was an old resident of Marion and Marion county. He was born In Yorkshire, Kngland, and camo to this country and to Marion in May, 1834.

Ho engaged in the butchering business here, and retired from that to enter in the shipment of cattle. He became a prosperous citir.en, and ac cumulated by his industry and energy nearly 400 acres of valuable land in Marion and Dig Island townships. His period of farm life was followed by his removal to Marion, where he has re sided for a number of years. Deceased was a well-known and worthy citien and a nieiiiWr of the I. O.

Will this subject ever attract the attention of scientists? It ought not to be impossible to discover some way by which communities can in a measure be protected from these terrible storms. Tn a Louisiana lottery question has.

settled down to a vigorous fight between money and principle in the legislature of that state, Probably no greater money temptation has ever been known to members of a legisla tive body than the thousands that ill given for the votes of the anti-lot tery men. The people of the whole country, who have become interested in the fight against the iniquitous scheme, are watching the outcome closely. It would really look pretty to write Marion's population "Ifl.tXH) according to the census of but should it reach the contemplated 8500 there is some consolation in the fact that there is a gain of 100 per cent, within the last i years. "Hope springs eternal in the human breast," and there is every reason to believe that the coveted ten thousand will be reached within a com paratively short time. With the encouragement of ail "infant industries'' there is no reason why this should not be so.

Tub numerous fights that have occurred in the city recently, and gone unpunished, are a good suggestion council to act on the police question.
